Tadalafil is the affordable, generic version of brand-name Cialis®. Cialis® was originally created and is produced by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, and generic tadalafil became available in 2018 after the patent protection ended. Both brand-name Cialis® and tadalafil have been shown to be safe and provide the same effects for erectile dysfunction, but tadalafil is available for a fraction of the price of Cialis®.
The most common side effects of generic for Viagra® are headache, lightheadedness, flushing, temporary abnormal vision, stuffy nose, sleep problems, back pain, and upset stomach. Your medical provider can help you mitigate or treat these symptoms if you experience them.
Topical minoxidil is an FDA-approved hair loss medication that does not require a prescription whereas oral minoxidil is considered an off-label prescription for hair loss and does require a prescription. "Off-label" means it's not FDA-approved for that particular use, but can still be prescribed at the provider's discretion.
Topical and oral minoxidil contain the same active ingredient. While there have not been clinical studies comparing their efficacy, there appear to be some benefits of using an oral treatment method vs. a topical medication method, such as more precise dosing and better medication adherence & consistency.
Some people may also benefit less from topical minoxidil due to lower levels of a specific enzyme in their hair follicles (follicular sulfotransferase). Oral minoxidil may be an effective alternative in this case, as the medication is absorbed systemically and is thought to be activated by the liver.
Some people may get results from topical minoxidil but still want to consider oral minoxidil due to negative experiences with the topical such as scalp irritation, medication running down your neck before you can rub it in, or the hassle of applying medication two times a day.
Using both topical minoxidil and oral minoxidil at the same time will not produce better results and therefore, is not recommended.
Many patients find it easier to take a medication by mouth once a day vs. applying a topical treatment. A simpler routine can help to improve treatment adherence and consistency (in other words, it's easier to make and keep a daily treatment habit), which supports better results.
While a patient's preference is always taken into consideration, treatment recommendations will be primarily informed by the individual's medical history along with the contraindications and potential side effects of oral minoxidil.
Tadalafil is generally safe for most men with ED. However, men who have other health conditions should alert their doctor prior to starting any erectile dysfunction medication.
Some medical conditions and symptoms that may predispose someone to adverse effects from tadalafil include heart problems like heart failure or a previous heart attack, angina or chest pain, irregular heartbeats, high or low blood pressure, retinitis pigmentosa (a rare genetic eye disease), pulmonary hypertension, stroke, liver disease, kidney disease, severe vision loss, stomach ulcers, bleeding problems, deformed penis shape or Peyronie's disease, experience with erections lasting more than 4 hours, or blood cell disorders like sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia.
Take sildenafil (generic for Viagra®) about one hour before sexual activity, as it takes about 30 minutes to an hour to begin working.
