Estradiol Vaginal Cream — Important Safety Information
Important safety information for low-dose estradiol vaginal cream — how to apply, warnings, side effects, and precautions.
Estradiol vaginal cream is a prescription product dispensed following an individualized medical evaluation by a licensed clinician. This summary does not replace guidance from your prescribing clinician.
How to use
- Insert the prescribed amount vaginally using the measured applicator, usually at bedtime, on the schedule your clinician sets.
- Wash the applicator and your hands after each use, and do not use more than prescribed.
Avoid transfer to others
- Estrogen cream can transfer through skin-to-skin contact. Wash your hands after applying, and a partner may have some exposure with intercourse — discuss timing with your clinician.
Before you start
- Tell your clinician about your full medical history, allergies, and all medications and supplements you take.
- Do not use if you are pregnant, may be pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
- Share any history of blood clots, stroke, breast or uterine cancer, liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding.
Important warnings
- Systemic absorption of low-dose vaginal estrogen is minimal, but estrogens as a class carry warnings for blood clots, stroke, and certain cancers. Report any unusual vaginal bleeding to your clinician.
- Seek emergency care (call 911) for sudden chest pain, shortness of breath, pain or swelling in a leg, sudden severe headache, vision changes, or weakness, numbness, or trouble speaking.
Possible side effects
- Local vaginal irritation, itching, or discharge, headache, or breast tenderness.
- Report any unusual or persistent side effects to your clinician promptly.
Precautions
- Store as directed and keep out of reach of children. Do not stop or change your schedule on your own.
You are encouraged to report negative side effects of prescription products to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
